Renowned Japanese Manga Artist Visits University of Calgary

Erica Sakurazawa gives an in depth look at the real-life career and creative process of a professional manga artist

On Wednesday, November 14th and Thursday, November 15th, SLLLC’s Japanese program, in conjunction with the Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary, was pleased to welcome renowned Japanese manga artist Erica Sakurazawa to Calgary.

Ms. Sakurazawa gave two talks, provided two drawing demonstrations, and led one student workshop for the University of Calgary and Alberta College of Art and Design students. Approximately 200 attendees across this two-day event were given an in depth look at the real-life career and creative process of a professional manga artist creating “ladies comics” in addition to learning about manga in Japan. Students received hands-on training in the tools and skills professional artists use to hone their craft.

The Japanese program wishes to extend a big thank you to Ms. Sakurazawa, all the attendees and student participants, our partners in the consular core, and the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. We look forward to hosting even more exciting events about Japanese popular culture in the new year and beyond!
