Profile

I started to serve as a DAAD Associate Professor of German Studies at the University of Calgary in September 2015. In the last decade I taught as a Research Associate and as a Temporary Acting Professor at the Philipps University of Marburg and at the University of Siegen, Germany. In 2012, I was habilitated at the Philipps University of Marburg with a study about Facing Atrocities. Emotional Effects of Literary and Audiovisual Representations of War from the 18th to the 21st Century (Im Angesicht der Grausamkeit. Emotionale Effekte literarischer und audiovisueller Kriegsdarstellungen vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert), Göttingen: Wallstein Verlag 2013.

In the same year I stayed as a Visiting Researcher at the DFG (German Research Foundation) financed Graduiertenkolleg Generationengeschichte. Generationelle Dynamik und historischer Wandel im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert at the Georg-August University of Göttingen (the post graduate research group Generational History. Generational Dynamics and Historical Transformation in the 19th and 20th Centuries). In Göttingen, I organized a conference about the memories of National Socialism in the media and edited the papers in the volume Familiengefühle. Generationengeschichte und NS-Erinnerung in den Medien (Berlin: Verbrecher Verlag 2014).

In 2012, I additionally started to work in another DFG financed project led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Döring at the University of Siegen, preparing a critical edition of a milestone of German pop literature of the late 1990s, the Siegener Kommentierte Ausgabe of Tristesse Royale, to be published online and in print. We analyzed the origination of the first edited version of this dialogue between the five authors Joachim Bessing, Christian Kracht, Eckhart Nickel, Alexander von Schönburg and Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre from the audio cassettes that were recorded during a three-days stay at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin in April 1999. The official title of the project is "The Adlon Tapes: On the Textual Genesis of Tristesse Royale".

My current own project deals with the emotional effects of literary anti-Semitism since the Early Modern Period. With a research proposal about emotive strategies of modern literary anti-Semitism in the 19th century I achieved a Junior Fellowship at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg in Greifswald, Germany, for the whole academic year 2016/2017. I used this grant for a research stay during summer 2017 and, while working on a monograph about that topic, organized the conference The Emotions of anti-Semitism (which took place on the 4rth and 5th of July 2017 in Greifswald, Germany). An edited volume of the conference papers will be published in 2019.

Before 2005, I lived and studied for 13 years in the German capital and received my PhD at the Free University of Berlin in 2004, with a comparing study on the works of Arno Schmidt and Thomas Bernhard. For a more detailed documentation of all my publications, my teaching in Germany and my current reasearch projects, please check out my website at the Philipps University of Marburg.
