My primary research focus, which falls under the umbrella of Linguistics leading toward Literacy Education, is on Second Language Acquistion and Language Pedagogy.

My interdisciplinary training in Francophone studies has also prepared me to study the impact that socio-cultural phenomena have on learning and/or acquiring a second language. I have always been interested in Language, as a system of communication, but especially as a vehicle for cultural expression. As a consequence, my main academic focus  has been the study of language phenomena in classrooms and within communities. In that particular respect, most of the research I have been doing  explores the linguistic interdependence between mother tongue literacy (L1) and second language learning (L2) in various speech communities.

Received the 2015 University of Southern Illinois Author Recognition Award for academic contribution to the University.
