About Me

As an applied linguist, I am interested in real-world language-related issues. Broadly, I am fascinated by all phenomena related to non-native speech, such as how second language users learn the sounds of a new language, how cognitive and psychosocial individual differences affect the learning process, how listeners react to non-native speech, how speaking with a foreign accent impacts speakers’ lives, and how teachers can address pronunciation more effectively in the classroom. Therefore, after obtaining a BA in English Language and Literature (with a concentration in Applied Linguistics) at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC – Brazil), I decided to pursue a master’s degree in the field of Applied Linguistics at the University of Calgary under Dr. Mary Grantham O’Brien’s supervision. I learned about this program as an undergraduate exchange student at SLLLC funded by the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (Global Affairs Canada), and I was immediately certain that working with a highly knowledgeable professional such as Dr. O’Brien would impact my career greatly.  In my free time, I like to get immersed in drag culture – I am a big RuPaul’s Drag Race fan. I also enjoy getting to know beautiful Alberta. I speak Portuguese, English and Spanish, and I am currently learning French.
