SPAN 599.07 - Afro-Peruvian Literature: Ethnicity, Culture and Representations - Winter 2007

This course will focus on one component/aspect of Peruvian literature which is often underrepresented, that is, Peruvian literature by writers of African descent. The main objective of this course is to help students develop an understanding of, and appreciation for the culture creation of Peruvian writers of African descent within the context of that country and Latin America, in general. It will examine Afro-Peruvian writers responses to marginalization and invisibility from Peruanidad, and will, through class lectures and discussions, as well as students presentations, explore critical topics such as social classes, ethnicity, religion, economic development, politics, gender issues, national identity and the family.
This course may not be repeated for credit.
