Title: Italian Opera as a Reflection on Italian Modern History? Their affinities and divergences between Rinascimento and Risorgimento. With this course the student will investigate relationships between Italian Opera and 19ty-century Italian historical novels. Is it possible to find a critical discourse on Italian history and politics in an apparent non-political genre as opera? The student will be encouraged to follow this line of research. The student will study "libretti" such as: Rossini, "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" Gaetano Donizetti, "Lucrezia Borgia" Giuseppe Verdi, "La Battaglia di Legnano" Puccini, "Turandot" and literary texts such as: Carducci's poems, Mazzini's "Filosofia della musica" Eco's "Baudolino" Boito's "Senso" Lampedusa's "Il Gattopardo" Bellonci's "Rinascimento privato".
This course may not be repeated for credit.
