Transfer effects in multilingual language development

Abstract

We provide an analysis of production data from a segmentation and word learning study involving Anglophones exposed to German for the first time. The primary goal of the study was to map auditory stimuli to pictures. Production data was collected afterwards. Analysis of production data revealed "transfer" effects are several levels: cognate items were less target-like than completely novel forms; syllable-position effects were found in that accuracy varied depending on whether the target sound was syllable-initial or syllable-final; learners had a greater time suppressing English-like articulatory gestures for some sounds. Nevertheless, there is indirect evidence that learners were encoding target-like sounds, as evidenced by shifts away from L1 sounds.
