Research and Teaching

From 2012 to 2015, I served in the department as a DAAD Associate Professor of German Studies, specializing in literature and other media, namely Weimar Classicism and Romanticism as well as contemporary literature, comics, and pop music. Since June 2015, I have been Head of a research project on writer's libraries at the Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association (for more information, click here). This network combines three of Germany's foremost literary research institutions; while I will be based at Klassik Stiftung Weimar, an institution that focuses on literature and culture from 1770 to 1850, I will collaborate with colleagues at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, which covers the 1500s to early 1700s, and the German National Literary Archive (DLA) in Marbach near Stuttgart, which deals with literature since the mid-1800s. My successor as DAAD professor will be Jan Süselbeck.

I will remain an Adjunct Associate Professor of German Studies and occasionally teach at the University of Calgary. For my future offerings at the Department of Linguistics, Languages and Culture, please check this page from time to time. I currently serve on a number of graduate committees. Upon request, I am open to serving on future M.A. and Ph.D. committees as well. If you are interested having me on board, please write to me, preferably at Stefan.Hoeppner@klassik-stiftung.de.

Des vielen Büchermachens sei kein Ende, schrieb der Prediger. Auch Bücher, die in oder mit Büchern aufräumen wollen, fallen unter sein Wort.

Friedrich Kittler (1942-2011)

Stagger onward rejoicing;
And even then if, perhaps
Having actually got
To the last col, you collapse
With all Atlantis shining
Below you yet you cannot
Descend, you should still be proud
Even to have been allowed
Just to peep at Atlantis
In a poetic vision:
Give thanks and lie down in peace,
Having seen your salvation.

W.H. Auden
