Research and Teaching

From 2012 to 2015, I served in the department as a DAAD Associate Professor of German Studies, specializing in literature and other media, namely Weimar Classicism and Romanticism as well as contemporary literature, comics, and pop music. Since June 2015, I have been Head of a research project on writer's libraries at the Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association (for more information, click here). This network combines three of Germany's foremost literary research institutions; while I am based at Klassik Stiftung Weimar, an institution that focuses on literature and culture from 1770 to 1850, I collaborate with colleagues at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel, which covers the 1500s to early 1700s, and the German National Literary Archive (DLA) in Marbach near Stuttgart, which deals with literature since the mid-1800s. My own current research focuses on the personal library of German national writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and his borrowings from the ducal library in the small duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, which he also supervised. Cooperating with a trained librarian, I work on Goethe Bibliothek Online, a digital catalogue of these books. Moreover, I work on a monograph and a series of articles, covering the history of Goethe's personal library as well as his writing practices, intellectual networks, and provenances as they manifest in his book collection. For the time being, I remain an Adjunct Associate Professor of German Studies at the University of Calgary. I currently serve on a number of graduate committees.
