Martin Wagner

Profile

Martin Wagner received his Ph.D. in German literature from Yale University in 2014 and subsequently taught comparative literature at Yonsei University, Underwood International College, before joining the University of Calgary in 2016. In his research, Martin focuses on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European literature as well as on German intellectual history. 

Martin is currently collaborating with Elys Griffiths on the project "Obedience and the Germans: A Cultural History, 1773–1982," funded by a SSHRC Insight Grant (2021–2025).

He is also working, with Dante Prado, on the project "Against Illustration," which reconstructs the history of the critique of pictorial illustration in literary texts. This project is funded by a Faculty of Arts Seed Grant. The preliminary results of this projects are being published here: illustration.ucalgaryblogs.ca 

Martin is the book review editor of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies.
