Biography

I divide my research time between Linguistics and Literature, with a particular interest for the dialectical link that exists between them.

As a (socio)linguist, I am interested in the contact of languages, language politics, the analysis of stereotypes, as well as discourse analysis, with a tangential interest for the didactical implications of sociolinguistic situations (i.e. Second Language Teaching). As a semiotician of literature, my work questions certain aspects of literary theory, using the corpus of West African literatures dating from the Negritude movement to current writers.

Founder of the Cercle Benveniste.

Active/Associate member of the following research teams: CELFA, Centre d'Études Linguistiques et Littéraires Francophones et Africaines (Bordeaux, France); GRRAFEQ, Groupe de Recherche sur les Rapports Acadie, France et Québec (Moncton, NB); GRICC, Groupe de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Cultures en Contact (Moncton, NB); and LACIS, Langues en Contact et Incidences Subjectives (Montpellier, France).

Postdoctoral Fellow (Bourse d'Excellence) with the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie in 2001-2002.

Visiting Professor at the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, where I teach graduate seminars for the ISEF (Institut Supérieur d'Études Francophones).

Research Profile

Situated at the crossroads of linguistics, historical anthropology and literature, my research examines the relationship between language and culture in sociolinguistic situations where languages come into contact and questions aspects of literary criticism. Another of my areas of interest is the study of linguistic representations (language stereotypes), and Second Language Teaching.

Active or Associate member of the following research groups: CELFA, Centre d'Études Linguistiques et Littéraires Francophones et Africaines (Bordeaux, France); LACIS, Langues en Contact et Incidences Subjectives (Montpellier, France); GRICC, Groupe de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Cultures en Contact (Moncton, NB); GRRAFEQ, Groupe de Recherche sur les Rapports Acadie, France et Québec (Moncton, NB).
