MA Admission Requirements and Application Procedure

Admission Requirements
 
In addition to Faculties of Graduate Studies and Arts requirements, the School requires:

a) An adequate academic background in one of the fields of Modern Languages, Linguistics, Literary, Film or Cultural Studies or another closely related field (i.e., a completed Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree from a recognized institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 [based on a 4-point system] on the work of the last 2 years of study).  Applicants with international credentials should consult the Faculty of Graduate Studies' international grade equivalencies.

b) A sufficiently high level of oral and written competence in the target language of study (a recommended minimum of CEFR level B2, ACTFL Intermediate-High, or equivalent).

c) English language proficiency requirement, for applicants whose primary language is not English. It may be fulfilled in one of the following ways:

  • a TOEFL score of 86 with no section less than 20 (Internet-based) or 560 (paper-based). Our institution code is 0813

  • a IELTS score of 6.5 with no section less than 6.0 (Academic version)

  • a MELAB score of 80, or higher

  • a PTE score of 59, or higher (Academic version)

  • having taken a sufficient number of English courses as part of a degree program (considered on a case-by-case basis)

  • successfully completing Tier 3 of the University of Calgary's International Foundations Program.

 


 

Application Procedure

For information on the application process, please refer to the guidelines of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Only complete applications will be considered. The application will include all of the following:

a) A complete on-line Application for Admission.

b) A statement of intent: a statement of research interest (minimum length: 250 words) which will include research topic and the reasons for wishing to pursue graduate work in this program.

c) An academic writing sample (of approximately 8-15 pages): a term paper, research paper or other writing, which applicants considers representative of their best work.

d) Two confidential references addressing the applicant’s academic qualifications for graduate studies.  A notification with the instructions will be e-mailed automatically to the referees listed on the application.  We recommend that applicants contact their intended referees ahead of time, informing them that the notification will be sent when the application has been submitted.   

e) Academic records (transcripts) of ALL post-secondary studies, including all studies that were started but not completed, and certified translations of any academic documents not in English or French.

The online application system provides instructions on how unofficial copies of transcripts can be uploaded. The documents posted are considered UNOFFICIAL but will allow the program to begin reviewing applications.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED.  To be considered official, academic records must be received in envelopes that have been sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution.  These must be sent directly by the institution to the LLAC program.

f) Payment of the application fee ($125 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents; $145 for international applicants).
