The Song of Everlasting Sorrow
Bai Juyi's Poem in Japanese Visual Expression

by X. Jie Yang

"Chang Hen Ge." This poem written in Tang Dynasty (618-907) China traveled long in Japan. The poet himself clearly recognized the very fact that his writing was popular in Japan, and this poem became a significant seed to The Tale of Genji. In early 17 Century, the entire poem became the content of a two-volume picture scroll by Kano Sansetsu (1590-1651), and it survives today in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, Ireland.

This presentation will explore the visual tradition in China and Japan through this beautiful poem and splendid scroll.
